I went to a camp this summer where I felt so close to God, but now that feeling is gone. How do I feel close to God again?

A lot of Christians have similar experiences when they visit retreats or Christian camps. This time is free from distraction and routine schedules, making it easier to focus on God. When many people return home, it seems like the feeling they had at the retreat was left behind too. Although that certain “feeling” may be gone, the Bible tells us that Jesus and His gift of salvation is still in our hearts. 2 Timothy 1:6 says, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” This verse says that when we become a Christian Christ ignites the flame of His love in our hearts forever and that He desires for us to “fan” it by growing closer to Him.

Every summer, when camping, I build a fire out in the woods. The fire starts with the small flame on the match and then as it spreads to pieces of wood, it grows bigger and bigger. It could literally burn forever if I kept putting wood on it. The faith in our hearts works the same way. Whenever you became a Christian, a small flame in your heart began to burn. As you continue to grow closer God and learn from His word, the flame grows bigger. On your church retreat, your flame was undoubtedly burning as bright as ever because you felt close to God as you focused on Him and spent time in His word. Now that you’re home, you may be adding less wood to the fire in your heart and it has begun to dwindle. Be assured that it will never go out, but that God desires for you to keep building it up even at home!

To practically help your fire grow, make God part of your day. Set apart time for Him each day and try to memorize scripture. Try carrying the verses around on a note card so you can be reminded of them throughout the day. Start with 2 Tim. 1:6 and focus on fanning the flame! Retreats are amazing for renewing your faith in Christ, but nothing is better than walking with Him daily!
