Katy Perry: I kissed a girl and I liked it

katy%20perry.jpgBy now, you’ve most likely heard of Katy Perry or for some, already have her in your iPod (yikes!). Her recently released single, “I kissed a girl” continues to be one of the top downloaded songs on iTunes. While the song does offer a great beat and a catchy tune, the lyrics – on the other hand – are simply messed up! Here’s a sample of the chorus:

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

Perry is being touted as “The next big thing” by Blender Magazine and “One to watch” by Teen People. But it’s interesting to note that she grew up as a pastor’s daughter, and even released a self titled gospel album just seven years ago.

What are your thoughts regarding her newly released single, “I kissed a girl?” Or even about Perry’s overall “eye candy” image she is currently promoting?

i think this song is absolutly terrible and practicaly an embaressement! the song presents a terrible image to teenagers and younger children. It is an even bigger shame that she grew up as a pastors daughter and has gone against everything he preaches practically! though i will be praying for her and hope she sees her wrong ways

Laura :

It saddens me because so many very young girls love to listen to top 40 music, memorize the lyrics and sing along. It must be very confusing to realize this song is a girl singing about a girl! I guess all bets are off about whats right and wrong.

Elizabeth:

I think it's pretty messed up...but really really sad. We really need to pray for (and become) good Christian role models. Especially in the secular entertainment element of things, there's a lot of negative pressure and we really need to pray that there will be some good people and that they will stick to their standards and stay good people!!! It just makes me really sad.

Courtney:

I was at 1st shocked. I was also disappointed. I believe that we should love all people, but I also know that in the bible (ex. Sodom & Gomorah) God distroyed those who sinned in Gay or Lesbian fashions. Wth her being a pastor's daughter she should know better. It is just so very disappointing. She could spend her time spreading God's word, but instead she is waistin it on such foolish songs.

madison:

we like the tune but we don't lyrics. so my friends and i amde this up:

i kissed a pig and i liked it
taste of his muddy chapped lips
i kissed a pig just to try it
hope my llama don't mind it
it felt so wrong it felt so right
don't mean i'm in love tonight
i kissed a pig and i liked it...
i liked it

i think that the song has a really good beat. but the words are so terrible!! one day my dad and i went to go visit my mom at work. i went into her office and heard the song playing on her ipod. i asked her where she got it. she said that she bought it off itunes and listens to it because it has a good beat. she uses it to get her moving on the treadmill when she works out. so i asked her if she understood the lyrics. she shook her head. i told her the lyrics and she was so upset. i dont think that Katy realizes that she is setting such a bad example for younger kids. and just thinking about how her dad was a preacher, just makes me think that her parents would've taught her better than that.

this makes me so sick!!! i am seriousley angry right now because i'm a pastor's daughter, too. i've always wanted to become a singer, and i've promised myself that if i ever do become a singer i would never do anything like this. we really need to start finding good Christain artists and put THEM on the top 40 list!

Christine:

Wow, I'll stay away from that... It's horrible how people set such a bad example for kids.

Alyssa:

First of all, I just wanted to say thanks for putting up an article about this. When I found out that the number one song on iTunes was about a girl kissing a girl, I practically threw up in my mouth. I heard it on the radio recently, and true, it has a good beat. It'd be a perfectly fine song if a guy were singing it. But come on now, it's just so gross. And then when I found out that she was a preacher's daughter? Wow. This Katy Perry girl needs a bear hug and a whole lot of Jesus.

i really like the beat of this song. but like everyone else has said, it has terrible lyrics. y do song writers think that teens like music with lyrics like this? y cant they make good lyrics that have an awesome beat like this?

jacqueline:

It's hard not to give into this stuff as sick as it is..... most of my girlfriends who are totally into this stuff don't like girls or anything they just like this song. it sadens me to see that this has been exepted in our socioty as just a good song. I didn't know that katy is a pastors daughter... somehow that makes it worse... It's hard to see how she could grow up being a pastors daughter and hearing about jesus every sunday and then grow up to write songs like this! :(

Dana:

I like the beat but the words i dont think so it sets a really bad image to kids and Teenagers and one of my friends like it and im trying to get her not to

Shanice:

I think the song is very sick. Poeple keeping saying it has a good beat it's true but the beat dose not change the lyrics, I did not know that Katy was a pastor's daughter. Pastor's daughter or not it is still very wrong. I pray that she finds something else to sing about maybe like singing about a boy! I heard a 11 year old girl singing that song and then my 10 year old cuz. What's happening to this world! :(

julie:

i agree with pretty much everyone else........ catchy tune...... horrible lyrics! as a pastor's daughter, i'm thinking that she's rebelling against her family and all their beliefs by releasing this song..... i hope she doesn't do another song like this again!

jackie:

i heard this song, at first i rly liked the beat, and thought it was cool, but when i heard the lyrics, i was so grossed out!! i know kids, from my church, who are christians, and love that song...it makes me sad, and wonder whether or not they really know what it's talking about.
it's pretty bad that the girl who sings this song is a pastor's daughter...i wonder how her dad feels?? wow.

i only listen to radio stations like thi fish or radio disney, so i've never actually heard the song (thank God!). i heard the title a couple of times and thought nothing of it--until, of course, i came across this article. this makes me wanna puke!!! i really wanna know what her family thinks of this...

BallerinaGirl:

WOW! I knew nothing about this Katy Perry until now! How messed up is this? It sickens me!! I went to get a new cell phone ringtone. It brings me straight to the "Top Tones" and I decided that I'd browse them. Sure enough, this song was the very first. This song is just another way to make our society acceptable of things that should NOT be acceptable. It is becoming so normal to hear stuff like this. Is this going to worsen, become the norm? I hope not, because imagine the world our children are going to grow up in!! Worse that what we are living in now. This just sickens me, it does. The first time I heard this song, I immediatelly fell in love with the sound of the music, I must admitt...then I heard the words. And I was deeply disturbed. Goodness. I will pray for this singer and other ones like her and the people who listen to this song and aren't disturbed. I applaud you other girls for standing up against this. Amen, sisters! =)

Arianna:

Wow, this song is really gross. I was at a roller rink and this song came on and all the little girls there started singing along and it was a huge shock. Katy is setting such a horrible example and wrongly influencing the minds of a whole bunch of people, young and old. Since she is a pastor's daughter and understands what a horrible thing she is doing it just seems so much worse.

Erin:

First of all, because of the subject matter I was shocked by this song, but then I realized that the verse is even worse. She goes on to claim that the kiss was strictly experimental. To think that our society today is so off base that Katy Perry, whom is not a lesbian, but just "testing it out" on a girl. This song truly makes me sick.

Kayla:

I think that this song is a terrible example for kids and teens everywhere. I think it is very sad that so many love this song....despite the lyrics. Many people listen to it because they like the beat, but eventually the lyrics do sink in to one's head and become internalized. I know sometimes I find myself singing songs I don't necessarily like but I've heard it so many times, it just comes out. As for the fact that she is a pastor's daughter, it is sad. I too wonder what her father is feeling. I think the best thing we can do is pray and ask God to help guard the hearts (and ears) of this younger generation!

beth:

this is sooo stupid though at the same time it's really sad. let's pray we don't fall away like that girl. also, i think we should pray for her and if she's not already for her salvation.

Kimberly:

Ironically, just a couple minutes after I read this, my little sister walked into the room singing this song. She only just turned seven a few days ago. Hearing her repeating lyrics like these was really quite shocking to me and I quickly tried to explain to her why she should not sing the lyrics as, when I asked her, she herself admitted she did not know what they meant.

Songs like these are really very troubling to hear about, especially when they receive so much attention and popularity. They set such a bad example for kids, and I have heard young children singing along to less than tasteful songs on more than one ocassion. The fact that she comes from a Christian background just makes it all the more disappointing. She'll certainly be in my prayers.

Karlie:

WOW WHO WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS???
She is giving younger children ideas of the " just try it, it wont hurt u", theroy!!!!!! I think thta song is very very very wrong and very inappropriate for younger children!!! I would no because my 5 year old sister loves it!!!! very bad i no!!!!!!

Christi:

I think it's really sad, not just for everyone else, but for Katie Perry also. Somehow she walked down a wrong path, and it's just going to bring her heartache. The whole eye candy thing is going to break her heart. Also, for other girls. It must be really confusing, and is going to cause a lot of destruction. It all just needs a lot of prayer. But how many of us say that without really praying for it?

Caitlin:

I honestly can't believe she's a preachers daughter. But I guess sometimes fame really gets to people and they forget what really is important. Yeah the song would be fine if a guy was singing it. It's a horrible example for all young children and teens. WE just have to pray for her and maybe she'll realize how much harm her song has done to young listeners.

marisa:

I think that this is very sad how she is representing herself. she is putting her self in a bad postion right now. i feel bad for her.

Bailey:

This song is TERRIBLE! I accidentally heard abit of it at performance camp this summer, and it has a cool tune, but the lyrics (which I am so glad the song was playing on someone's phone and I couldn't really understand what they were) are just SICK. I also can't believe that a pastor's daughter could turn out that way. When I first saw the song on the iTunes list, I have to admit that my mouth was so agape it looked like the Grand Canyon. My only thought at the time was, "SICK!" I was completely shocked. I will pray that God will help her see what it is she's doing: setting a bad example.

Naomi:

That is really disgusting....those lyrics. It's pretty astonishing that she grew up a 'Pastor's gal'. Too bad she didn't stick with her faith.

I usually don't listen to the pop music, but my little sister does. Its actually one of her favorite songs. When I do listen to 'her' music I usually focus in on the words and then the tune. The opposite of most people. If I don't like the words I change the station. I have had to change the station many times with this song.

Anonymous:

I agree with every body else. Its a wrong song.

Gianna:
