Book Review: Teen People of the Bible

teen%20people%20of%20the%20bible%20cover.jpgProfiling 30 teens and their lives in Scripture, Teen People of the Bible: Celebrity Profiles of Real Faith and Tragic Failure (2007), is a project that author Daniel Darling refers to as an opportunity to “encourage Christian teens to do more than what the church and society expects from them.”

“The truth is that God calls young people right now, today, where they are, to do great things for Him. That is the message of the teens in the Bible. Don’t wait until you’re older. Don’t wait until someone taps you on the shoulder and says, here’s your life. Seize the moment.”

Narrating the lives of characters like Cain and Abel, Rachel and Leah, Josiah, Jeremiah and Joash, Darling has composed a 100 day devotional recounting the issues teens face each and every day. With questions like “can I afford to ignore small sins?” to “how do I handle a diva” and “who am I when no one is looking?,” the devo offers readers an easy to read (and meditate) format that highlights real issues of faith as seen from a teen.

Darling first thought of the project sprouted from the desire to offer teens a resource that would encourage them to read the Bible. “I think that if teens knew that their own stories were in the Bible – as played out in the lives of characters like Daniel, Rebekah, Joseph, David – they would be more apt to read the Bible and let God use His Word to change their lives.”

On a final note, Darling wants “teens to know that God loves them and His way is not just the best way, it’s the only way. I know there are many with tough family situations, doubts about their faith, wondering why they hear about God but don't see faith lived out in the Christians they know. I want to challenge them to dig deep and get to know God on their own. They'll find He'll never let them down.”

Kristi:

I really like Caleb, for his courage to go into the promised land.

Jackie:

My favorite Bible character is Esther because of the way destiny was already planned out in her life and also because she was a small town girl that made a huge impact.

Giovanna:

My favorite bible character is Esther because of her admirable faith and courage.

Jacie:

My favorite bible characters are Jacob, Rebeka, and Sarah!!! This book sounds really good. i could use something like this!!!!

Kylie:

My favorite Bible character is probably Hannah. Although she had people telling her she was no good, she didn't believe that or the fact that she was too old and God couldn't give her a son. Instead she believed in Him and what He said, not what others tried to convince her. Hannah trusted God and knew that He would keep His promises and He did! I believe that part of the reason why He did was because of Hannah's undying faith in Him.
In think this a lesson for all of us. We need to realize that despite what the world says and our circumstances that if God has promised us something it will come to pass.

Just wait on Him!!!

Brianna:

Although other people have said her, Esther is definitely one of my favorite Bible characters. She had so much courage through hard times, and she deserved so much recognition. Also, the most important thing is that she trusted her Lord through all the tough times she went through. She stood up for what she believed in, even when the going got rough, and that's why I definitely respect her. :)I know that we're just supposed to say one, but I also love the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the way they went against the grain to stand up for God and trusted him to pull them through (which, of course, He did :)).

That books sounds tres wunderbar ^^ I must say it is really hard to choose a fave, but on my top five list would be Jesus of course :p or since He is sort of the author does that count? Because there is certainly a lot to learn from all the other Bible characters, but they were all either great or dire, far away figures that we can learn from. However, you cant well have a personal relationship with say, Gideon. ( Gideon is my old testament fave btw, because he reminds me of me as in hew as young and had to see it to believe it ect,) Go Jesus!! Lolololol :p wow long post...
