I wish you guys were in the room with me and we could just have this conversation instead of me writing out all that's in my head and waiting for your comments. This is why the internet will never take the place of real relationship. So let's pretend...my first question is how many of you have read this book? And in my head I think maybe a lot of you have because it's a bestseller. I also think I heard some of you say that it's just a harmless book that's fun to read because it's written in IM or because it's stuff you can relate to. But I have to tell you that it made me so incredibly sad when I read it. It made me sad for anyone who reads it and thinks that it's harmless and sad for the author who wrote it and thinks that it's harmless...because it really is anything but. What I have learned from experience is that the more junk I put into my head, the more my view of things gets twisted and warped until it lines up with the junk instead of with the truth. I have also learned from experience that the only truth I can really trust is the truth laid out by Jesus himself. And I honestly believe this book makes Him sad too. Sad because so many of His beautiful girls think it's normal to be obsessed with boys and sex. Sad because He created us for Himself first and to be a light in this world instead of just another gossiping, crude, cussing, self-centered, desperate, over-sexed young woman who gives herself away freely to whoever or whatever seems like the most fun in the moment.
I know that there are girls like the characters in the book and messed up teachers like the one in the book - I have met them. What the author doesn't show in the book is that these girls aren't usually happy-go-lucky and they often struggle with depression and all that goes with it. God never intended for us to be all about ourselves - we are here on a mission to love Him the most and others like we love ourselves.
So here's what I walked away with after reading the book: First I need to pray. Pray for all of us who have chosen any life other than a life with Jesus, because there is minimal joy there and it goes away pretty quickly. Pray for authors like Lauren Myracle who do more harm that good with their abilities and lead others away from God instead of toward Him.
If you haven't read the book, please don't. It's offensive and base and shows girls at their worst instead of encouraging them to be women of character and integrity. If you have read the book...let's talk. Let me know what you thought. I really want to hear from you guys.
love
jamie

I appreciate the heads up as I have not read this book, and I appreciate the reminder of such important things even though I haven't read the book. And the reminder to pray--so often our first thoughts are thoughts of judgment not prayer and that's not what God wants. I love how you guys take things that are real and now and talk about them (music, books, etc.) I love that it's a Christian influence. Thank you so much.

I have never read that book and don't plan on reading it, plus this is my first time hearing about it. What does ttyl mean?

This book is part of a three-part series. The girls eventually start discussing their sexual activity, in fairly vulgar terms and discuss relationships with teachers as well. The books look innocent but border on pornography, in my opinion.

Not only have I read the book, I own it. I was in Barnes & Noble looking at the best-sellers and that one caught my eye. Once I started reading it though, two thoughts came to mind; "Put the Book Down" and "Keep Reading." It was hard not to stop reading because it had that sort of story line that makes you want to know what happens next, but it was also digusting and vulgar, and I can't believe I let that trash into my mind. Once I was done, I let my friend read it, which I thought was a mistake but it turned out to open a door. Because once my friend was done reading, she gave the book back to me and said "It's like this book was wrote about me." I felt like God wanted me to give her the book so she could tell me that, so I could pray for her. Needless to say, my friend is doing so much better thatnks to the Lord, and those books; I'll never waste my time again.

WOW. Thank you for letting meknow this, I haven't read it, but going in to local book stores like Borders, or Barnes and Noble, have seen that it is a best seller, and was curious to read something in ALL text messages, but your article tells my gut instinct, that seeing that cover in the book store should make me thankful that I am not going to read that book, and stay true to Christ.

Did you even read the book? This book shows what happens to those who give themselves away. SPOILER: the girl who exposed herself at the end was faced with humiliation and isolation. Although this was certainly not a Christian book, it shows that jumping into a life of debauchery is not worth it if you lose your friends. The moral was not sex, boys, and lust.

Sasha,
I did read the book and I honestly believe that it does more harm than good. The only good thing i saw in the book was that the 3 remained friends in the end. What the books doesn't show is that jumping into a life of debauchery isn't worth it no matter how it ends with your friends. It slowly destroys your soul and moves you farther and farther from the only One who truly loves you. My hope is that people will start creating characters that raise the bar and challenge us all to be better people instead of encouraging us in our downward spiral.

A lot of my friends read those kinds of books but dont really care about the bad stuff. Im glad u guys are talking about it because its encouraging me to put movies, shows, etc. like that down.

Thanks so much for writing this article. I havent read this book and I won't now but I might have if I didn't read this article. I do have a question though that's a little off- subject. What do you think about the Twilight Series written by Stephenie Meyers?
Posted by Jenna | October 19, 2008 5:37 PM
Jenna - It's funny you would ask that. I just read the first book and was thinking about doing a write up on it. Have you read it?
Posted by Jamie | October 20, 2008 2:44 PM
Ok...i completely understand wat you are saying...but why can't you read books like that to see what it's like to be a non Christian? Im just wondering....not saying your wrong at all!!! Im just thinking aren't those the kind of people that Jesus would be hanging out with anyway...just a thought

Jamie,
I enjoyed your evaluation on the book. I had seen it displayed at various places but never knew anything about it so thanks for the heads up. I was wondering if you had ever read any of Ellen Hopkin's books. It was recommened to me by one of my friends. I just wanted another person's feed back before i started reading it. Thanks again for the review!

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Yes, I have read the first one and started the second one. I enjoyed the first book but it seems as the series continues, the content of the books gets worse and worse so I stopped reading them for at least a while because I dont think its a very good thing to be putting into my mind. But it would be great to get your input on the series.

Hannah - That's such a good question. Jesus definitely hung out with the people that most of us write off. I guess it's really a question of motives since God is watching our hearts. Like are you reading it in order to understand non-Christians better so you can actually reach out to them? Because gathering knowledge is a dangerous thing if we don't do anything with what we learn. That's one of the biggest problems in the church today. People hear sermon after sermon and go every Sunday without fail, but never apply what they're learning. And that's pointless. There's also the issue of purity and being set apart. Can I read these books and still please God? Maybe I'll hit this in a featured article because it deserves a better answer than what I can do here. Holler back if you have any thoughts on that. I like the way you're thinking.
Posted by Jamie | October 30, 2008 2:09 PM
Jamie- That is a very good point about the intents of our hearts. Cause we may tell ourselves "Hey, it's fine. I'm just reading it so I can see what non-Christians live like and reach out to them." But, deep down... in our hearts we may be reading the book because it is sin-pleasing. And I also like what you said about gathering knowledge, but not doing with it. Nicely said.
Very good points, everyone.

I saw this book once and thought it looked cool! So I did what anyone else would do I read the back of it. Nothing there that was great. So I asked my mom and she said that she didnt know about it either. One night when my mom was checking her emails she one from ya'll and it had said something about this book. Momma took me back into her room and talked to me about it and I totally understanded why I wasn't going to read it. God has shown alot through you guys thanks so much for all the heads up on these things! You guys rock!

Thx...well I personally believe strongly enough in my faith that I can read this and not go against GOd in my doings. I for very much life as trying to bring those who aren't art of God's kingdom to him. I just think maybe things like this that most Christians automatically look down on things (music, books, movies...etc.) that aren't "Christian." Im just saying that its ok to read things like that to realate with ppl like that and actually be able to help them. I just wanted to put that idea out there that Jesus did not descriminate against nonfollowers so we maybe we should go to the bookstore where someone will be looking at that book in hopes to buy it. Instead of judging them we could see it as an opportunity to change a life..Im saying that because I have personally see this happen. Just trying to put my thoughts out there...Plez don't think im saying anyone is wrong!

Jamie,
Ok, I know I'm so behind... sorry, but i wanted to write a response to the Twilight question. I have read all 4 of the books and they are insanely addicting- for all the wrong reasons. And it is true that they get worse and worse as the series progresses. I read the last 3 all together over thanksgiving break and i have to tell you that they messed up my mindset pretty bad. I don't know about anybody else, but it really left me wanting a guy like that more than anything else. And it wasn't so much a sexual desire but an emotional- that i think was more damaging to me than anything else. i had to run some serious damage control.

Wow, I've actually thought about reading this book several times. So I'm really glad I saw this before I decided to.
